TBWA/Hakuhodo created these stunning ice cube sculptures for Suntory Whisky using a CNC router in what they’re dubbing an “inverse 3D printing technique”
In 2014, Suntory Whisky hired the ad agency TBWA/Hakuhodo to create stunning 3D ice sculptures for their commercial. The agency has since won a Branded Content & Entertainment Lotus truphy at the Asia-Pacific Advertising Festival in Thailand.
So now the question is, how did they do it? Using Autodesk 123 and a CNC router, that’s how. Technically routing is a subtractive process, unlike 3D printing (also known as additive manufacturing). However, many people don’t realize that 3D printing is a tool under the larger umbrella of small scale manufacturing and rapid prototyping.
At Voxel Magic, we take on all kinds of engineering projects and use various techniques and processes that work hand-in-hand with 3D printing. CNC routing, laser cutting, and finishing are all tools in our arsenal that can help you with your next project whether it be a prototype of your latest invention, an architectural model for your client, or some pretty gnarly 3D ice sculptures that can fit inside your whisky glass!
